Limekilns Project

Name of the project: Day-Care-Center-cum-School for children of Limekiln Workers, Piduguralla.

Status: On going

Target group: Infant babies, Children of school dropouts (Child Labors) and aged people, who worked in Lime kilns.

Strategy approached:

Piduguralla is situated about 70 kms away, from the District head quarters Guntur. It is famous for production of limepowder and it is called as lime city of South India. Within a 10 kms radius, about 300 Limekilns and pulverizing factories are established. Here hundreds of poor labourers are employed. Most of them have migrated to this place, from nearby districts. They live in small thatched huts and Asbestos sheds, nearby the limekilns, where they work. Due to polluted air, many of them get diseases like Tuberculosis, Asthma and other respiratory problems. Their income is very low and they cannot afford good nutritious food and medical care, which has left them with no option but prolonged sufferings.

The prevailing situation is victimizing the women; children leave school and work alongwith parents to contribute a bit to family income. As they are made to work at their tender age in the worst condition, they become victims to the dreaded diseases like T.B. Women and aged people’s condition is also not better. This pathetic situation prompted AMG and Wort & Tat, Germany, to start different welfare programs like Day Care Center cum School, Milk project and Mid-day-meal for old age people.

  • Day Care Center cum School was started to impart education and improve the health condition of the poor children. Now, children of labourers are studying in English medium and enjoying good food and health. They are provided with study Materials, Uniform, Civil dress, Shoes and Nutritious food through breakfast and lunch.
  • Milk project was started to help the poor infants get Supplementary nutritious food, so that, they will no more suffer with malnutrition and enjoy good health.
  • Mid-Day-Meal to help the poor old age people, get nutritious food, at least once a day, so that they do not go out to the streets, to beg for their life.

Job and Business Centre was started in the year 2003. JBC is a cell, in AMG Head office, Chilakaluripet. One year JBC programme begins from 1st November to October 31 every year. Now the 6th batch is running well with 75 students. JBC helps the students of ITI, who have completed their study, to acquire practical knowledge/experience through on job training, in various Industries and Factories, depending upon their skills and trade. Basically, the students learnt theory and practical work in AMG ITI.

Those who want to join in AMG Institutions, mostly come from villages and small towns and hence, they don’t have sufficient information regarding job opportunities available, after their studies and more over, their parents are illiterates. Hence, their parents are unable to send their children to higher studies, due to lack of financial strength. Therefore, JBC training helps the students to select suitable jobs/placements, after completion of on the job training.

Objectives:

The process, which facilitates the link between education and work, is called Job and Business Centre and its objectives are, building a bridge between Vocational training/ Secondary/ Higher education and Labour market/ Entrepreneurship and job placement.

  • Among work trainees, some became self-motivated and committed and driven to work independently. We have seen a lot of deference in them, when compared to past, in terms of work.
  • JBC helps the students about the job opportunities and training facilities available to improve their skills and to become self-sustainable.
  • JBC helps the students financially, either fully or partly, to start their own workshops, depending upon their trades, as full time service centre.
  • Most of the students come from villages of Guntur, Krishna, Prakasam, East & West Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts of Andhra Pradesh. Target group is poor students and they are living below poverty line, who have completed ITI course in AMG- DITI.
  • Coming to follow up of the 5 batches, nearly 80% of the Students are settled in professional life with the help of on job training.
  • Every month, we gather the job trainees in our campus. We arrange speakers, in their monthly gathering to deliver messages on various topics, such as skill development/ Personality development, Moral values, Dignity of labour, Leadership qualities, financial managements, Business ethics, savings and Job opportunities available, so that our trainees are well equipped in all aspects and are able to face any/ all situations in their life.
  • Management of the companies and parents of the trainees are cooperating with us, for effective implementation of the project.
  • During this training period, our trainees got government apprentice certificates, which are eligible for permanent jobs in government sectors.
  • We are receiving requirement letters from leading factories, for our ITI students, for on job training, because, our previous trainees performed their duties very well and also their conduct and behaviour was good.

Fishermen Project

Community Development Project for Fishermen, Vadarevu

Introduction: Vadarevu is a seashore village, located on the Bay of Bengal, which is 7 kms away from Chirala town. The habitants are fishermen and suffering from Poverty, deprivation and exploitation by money lenders, due to lack of education. Most of the people live in thatched huts and they spend most of the time on sea water for Fish catching.

Women sell the dry fishes in Chirala town and surrounding places. They get scanty income, which is hand to mouth.

Dr. John David, Founder, AMG India International came to know their pitiable living conditions and started different projects for the upliftment of the fishermen community in Vadarevu area, with the co-operation of WoordEnDaad, Netherlands.

SCHOOL: Education plays a vital role in the life of everybody. So, AMG established English Medium School for children of fishermen in the year 1993 with 330 children. At Present the strength is 1227. We provide education, food, uniform, books and other Amenities to children of fishermen, free of cost. Many students benefited and became Sustainable.   For more information.

Housing colonies construction:- AMG constructed 54 & 124 houses for fishermen families, in Krupanagar and Danvaipet of Adivipallipalem, Vadarevu, who were living in huts with poverty. Now, they are leading happy life in pucca houses.

Day Care Centre for Aged women:- Most of the fishermen live below poverty line. They could not provide adequate meal and clothes to their aged mothers. Because of negligence by their kith and kin, the aged women became street beggars with ragged clothes. To remove this begging, AMG India International started a Day Care centre. We provide mid day meal, clothes and free medical treatment for such selected 100 aged women.

Free Clinic (Hospital):- Due to poverty and lack of awareness, people of Vadarevu and surrounding villages used to take traditional medical treatment. As a result, they are suffering a lot and some of them lost their lives also. For the benefit of the community AMG started a Free Clinic (Hospital) with qualified Doctor and staff. The Villagers of Vadarevu, Danvaipet, Krupanagar, Keertivaripalem, Burlavaripalemetc get medical treatment through this free clinic.

Credit program (Interest-free loans for Boats & nets and Thrift groups):-
In the previous days, fishermen used to go in wooden boats for fishing. Their income was very little. To feed the family, they take loans from the money lenders. They are exploited by the money lenders, because of poverty. AMG provided Interest free loans to make motorboats and quality nets. In 1st phase-16, 2nd phase-10, 3rd phase-10 and 4th phase-10 boats were provided. Another 15 boats are under manufacturing. Fishermen became independent and self-sustainable. Provide interest free loans to Thrift group women for women empowerment.

Ice plant cum Cold storage: It is well known fact that, every fisherman needs Ice to keep their fish catch in a good condition. Unless they maintain fish in good quality, they will not get good price. But they were exploited by the money lender, local businesspeople in selling fish and buying ice. By observing the above facts, and receiving many appeals from fishermen, AMG has started an Ice-cum cold storage and retail work shop for these people. Then, the life style of the community has totally changed. The fishermen developed self-confidence, self esteem and became self-reliant.

Adult Literacy program:-  Due to lack of education, the fishermen were exploited by the middlemen and money lenders. They came to know that education is important for the development individual and community. So, AMG launched and running 50 Adult Education centers in Vadarevu area. We provide Teaching aids like slates, black boards, prescribed textbooks etc.

As a result, they learnt small arithmetic like additions, deductions, multiplications and divisions etc. This helped them to calculate correctly and they came out from the clutches of money lenders. The attendance of the children in the school is increased. Taking traditional medicines reduced and women empowerment increased.
