AMG School, Yeleswaram was started in 1995. Yeleswaram is a small town and mandal head quarters in East Godavari Dist. It is surrounded by 47 quarries. According to AMG survey, there are about 3000 child labours working in these quarries.
The granite rocks are tough and even experienced elders in quarries get tired, as it requires lot of muscle power. The rock has to be cut to various sizes. It is really a tough job. Income is low. The fate of these young children is inexplicable. Their tender hands cannot break the rocks and they develop sores and blisters in doing so. Sometimes, they bleed. At times, the tiny stone particles strike their eyes and they lose their sight. They sweat in the scorching sun, breaking the hard stones.
Neither the children nor the parents know of any childhood joys/rights or parental happiness respectively. All they want is food. No school, no play, no health. They waste their precious childhood. They do not enjoy playing around. Frequent blisters on palms and inhaling the stone dust filled air all the time. As they breathe the contaminated air of dust, their lungs get infected at a very young age, which is frightening even to imagine. This is the gloomy picture in Yeleswaram.
Knowing the above situation, AMG started a school, for these unloved and uncared children. It started as bridge school. Broadly speaking, this project is not only for the children, but for the development of the whole quarry labourer’s community. This is very special of its kind started by AMG. It was initially started by renting an abandoned rice mill and erecting thatched sheds and huts and providing cooking and sheltering facilities to the students and teachers. By the grace of God, now we have our own buildings to run the school and other projects.
